Red White and Blue Dessert Ingredients

For a colorful red, white and blue dessert, we recommend using blueberries with raspberries or strawberries. Cherries are another option, although they’ll take longer to prepare as you’ll need to destone them.

We like using mascarpone cheese for this Summer parfait. It has a lovely creamy texture, yet it’s light and easy to mix. This Italian cream cheese comes from the Lombardy region of Italy.

Mascarpone is made by adding citric or tartaric acid to whole cream. If you can’t get hold of mascarpone, whipped low fat ricotta cheese works very well too.

You can also use low fat cream cheese, although it has a firmer texture and won’t be as silky smooth as mascarpone. For an even creamier taste, we like to add a few tablespoons of heavy cream.

Vanilla extract also gives this Summer dessert an extra something special. If you like, add a few drops of lemon juice to offset the sweetness.

The final ingredient for a truly patriotic dessert is white chocolate stars or edible gold star sprinkles. They’re a quick way to add instant pizzazz to any dessert recipe.

How to Make Patriotic Parfaits

This dessert is ideal when you’re short of time as it takes less than 10 minutes from start to finish. Firstly, macerate your chosen red fruit in white or brown sugar for a few minutes to bring out the juices. We’ve listed all the quantities in the recipe card below.

Then mix together the mascarpone, heavy cream and vanilla extract. There’s no need to use a mixer as it’s so easy to blend.

Layer a small drinking glass or sundae glass with the red fruit.

Add the cream and then the blueberries. Carefully place the chocolate stars on top.

We actually use tweezers as it can be quite fiddly! If a few stars fall into the fruit mixture, that’s not a problem at all.

The stars add a lovely texture to this dish. If you like, you can also add a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Transform these parfaits into red white and blue trifles by adding angel cake to the mix. Alternatively, make a patriotic cheesecake by including crushed cookie crumbs at the base.
